The LCPS organized and held a regional conference on "The Arab World and the Prospects of a Regional Settlement". The two-day conference was held at the Riviera Hotel and it assembled around 120 Lebanese and other Arab economists and political scientists. Some of the speakers who came from Jordan, Kuwait, Egypt, Morocco, and Syria addressed and evaluated the effects of regional peace on political, economic and security levels.

On March 9, 1995, Dr. Habib Abu Sakr,
the Director General of the Ministry of Finance, delivered a speech
prepared by the Finance Minister, and Dr. Nadim Munla, the Minister's
chief economic advisor, presented the governments plan to finance
the reconstruction of Lebanon and the financial model which underpins
it. The seminar was held at Al-Bustan Hotel, and was attended
by a group of 40 businessmen, bankers, and economists. Most of
the discussions which followed the presentation centered around
the question of the future direction(s) of the Lebanese economy.
The seminar is part of an on-going research and conference program entitled "The Lebanese Economic Tribune" (LET), organized by the LCPS and supported by the International Center for Economic Growth (ICEG) and the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE). The objective of the LET is to guide research, organize workshops and conferences, and provide information and analysis on key economic issues.
The LCPS organized and held a one-day
conference on "Reform of the Electoral Law for the 1996 Parliamentary
Elections" on the 27th of July 1995. The conference was attended
by political scientists, lawyers, deputies, political activists,
and journalists. Conference participants debated the advantages
and disadvantages of various electoral models and discussed ways
to improve the fairness of elections in Lebanon.
This conference led to the creation of a task force consisting of political and legal experts who meet on a regular basis to discuss the reform of the parliamentary election law.
A paper on industrial policy in Lebanon
was prepared and presented by to Dr. Elie Yashouie, an LCPS research
associate, and a professor of Economics at St. Joseph University.
The seminar was held at the American University of Beirut Alumni
Association on the 28th of September, 1995. The policy paper outlines
the main problems and opportunities facing Lebanese Industry and
calls for more favorable government policies. The seminar was
attended by 45 economists, academics, businessmen, and journalists.
The presentation was commented on by Mr. Nicholas Nahass who is
a member of the Board of Directors of the Lebanese Industrialists
Association
The study entitled "Towards
an Industrial Strategy for Lebanon" was published in Arabic
and was widely circulated to ministers, parliamentarians, economist
and members of the press. It includes the paper and the discussions.

conference on the "The Challenges Facing the Judicial Sector
in Lebanon". The conference was held on the 29th of September,
1995 and it assembled a number of leading judges, lawyers, and
judicial analysts. The conferees revealed the significance of
the new Constitutional Court and identified problems such as the
delays of court cases and the lack of autonomy and independence
of the judicial sector. Papers on the evolution of the judicial
system, the judicial system and the role of the appellate courts,
the independence of the judiciary, and civic courts and their
role in the protection of rights and freedoms, are all published
in the LCPS' Arabic Journal of Abaad, issue No. 5.
