Middle East Research Competition (MERC)
A Grant-Giving Program For Social Science Research In The Arab World and Turkey
From September 1997 to September 2002, the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies (LCPS) housed and managed the Middle East Research Competition (MERC), which is a grant-giving program open, on a competitive basis, to scholars and researchers in the Arab world and Turkey. The grants were mainly for studies in the social sciences. MERC -- sponsored by the Ford Foundation office for the Middle East and North Africa in Cairo -- provided many grants over the past years to researchers from the Middle East and North Africa.
In managing this program, the LCPS enhanced its regional contribution and played a significant role in promoting high-quality and relevant social science research on the Middle East.
Since October 2002, the Center for the Study of Developing Countries (CSDS) at Cairo University – Egypt has undertaken the management of the Middle East Research Competition (MERC).
