Situation Analysis of Women and Children in Lebanon. 1995

Table of Contents | Introduction

Sponsored by UNICEF, the LCPS prepared a country-wide report on the situation of women and children in Lebanon. The report examines the status of women and children in society after sixteen years of war, and explores ways in which their situation can be improved in a country which is now facing tremendous social, economic, and political challenges. The aim of the report is to identify and highlight social problems pertaining to women and children in post-war Lebanon and provide suggestions and recommendations which guide UNICEF to focus on areas in need of special attention and on priority problems of women and children and then proceed into formulating strategies to address the causes of these problems.

The analysis report is based on a review of previously published documents, reports, and statistics regarding issues related to women and children. The Ministry of Education, the World Bank, the Center for Education and Research Development, and UNICEF in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Health have been able to carry out a number of studies and surveys which were used and are cited in the analysis. The report consists of three main sections. The first provides a national overview of the country. The second focuses on physical and emotional condition of Lebanese women and children and highlights their social and health problems, and the underlying causes behind these problems. The third section discusses the global and sectoral priorities and provides recommendations for the different areas addressed in the study, with the aim of improving the situation of children and women in post-war Lebanon.

The situation analysis report served UNICEF and the Lebanese government to focus on priority problems of children and women and to incorporate project proposals included in the report, into the countryís national plans and programs for children and women in the next five years(1996-2000).
